What just happened?

A monologue from the perspective of a disciple, in the midst of the Last Supper.

What just happened?
What did Jesus say?
And what on earth is Judas doing?

It’s been a crazy week,
Donkeys, palm branches, temple chaos.

But now it’s the Passover meal,
We’re remembering how God delivered Isreal,
And is always faithful to us.

Couldn’t we have one night when we just relax together,
Giving thanks for God’s faithfulness,
And enjoying each other’s company?

But Judas has gone and done it again,
Made his own plans.
We all know he’s politically active,
willing for Jesus to overthrow the Romans by force.
But we keep telling him,
Jesus will act when the timing us right,
Be patient.
Trust him.

But for Jesus to say one of us is going to betray him…
And then indicating it’s Judas…
I mean, I guess if it was going to be anyone,
Maybe it would be him.
But still, to Betray him?

What does that even mean?
Betray.
Isn’t betrayal going against someone?
Yes Judas is pretty radical in his views,
But he is so behind Jesus’ principles of freedom from earthly powers,
Why on earth would he go against Jesus?
Betray him?

And then,
I’m still mind blown by what’s just happened,
And trying to make sense of it all.
When, as we are eating and drinking,
Jesus took some of the bread from the table.

He blessed it,
And told us to eat it – because it is his body.

And then he took a cup of wine,
And he gave thanks for it,
and said it was his blood of the covenant.
Poured out for many the forgiveness of sins.

We’re there.
Marking the festival of Passover,
With the unleavened bread.
Remembering the bread made in haste because Isreal fled Egypt at pace.

And then he says the wine is blood.
And at Passover,
the Israelites painted lambs’ blood across their doorposts
to tell the angel of death to pass over them.

That’s, of course, where Passover comes from.
Reminding us that God saved his people,
Protected them from death,
Liberated them from oppression and slavery.
Redeemed them.

And now Jesus says the bread is his body,
And the wine, his blood of the covenant,
For us, and for many, for the forgiveness of sins.

What does it all mean?
What is Judas doing?
What has just happened?

  1. I have just read this, I like the confusion and the not understanding what’s happening, the fact that Judas, has “done it again “. You can feel the atmosphere in the room, you live it with the Disciples, well at least I did.
it reminds me of a song from Jesus Christ Superstar, “ what’s the buzz, tell me what’s happening?”

    Many Thanks for sharing
